Should I buy a dog grooming franchise or an independent salon?
A franchise brings a brand, a booking system, training and groomer-recruiting help, in return for ongoing fees on your services and rules you must follow. An independent salon gives you control and keeps more decisions with you, but you build the systems yourself. Compare what each gives and what each asks.
The choice is really about who runs the systems. In a franchise, the brand supplies much of the structure and expects you to follow it. In an independent salon, the structure is whatever the seller built. Both can serve dogs well. What differs is how much you control, what you pay along the way and how easily you can sell later.
Booking system and client data
Franchise brands often run one booking platform for every location. Ask who owns the client list and what happens to it if you leave. An independent salon may use its own software, or a spreadsheet and a phone. Find out what data actually transfers and whether you could carry it elsewhere. Clients are the asset, so how they are recorded matters.
Fees, training and staffing
Fee structures vary by franchise and are set out in the agreement, including whether fees apply to service income. Ask the franchisor to explain each fee in plain terms. In return you may get training and help finding groomers. An independent salon charges no such fees, but you source training and hiring yourself, and the seller’s own methods may not be written down.
Resale approval and your lawyer
If you are buying an existing franchised salon, the agreement may require the franchisor to approve you; check its terms. Ask early what approval involves and how long it takes. Disclosure and contract rules for franchises are a legal question, so take the franchise agreement to a lawyer before you commit to either path.
