Should I buy a dog walking business or start one?
Because a dog walking business owns little beyond its relationships, the choice turns on whether clients, house keys and walkers will stay with you, against the time it takes to earn that trust from nothing. Ask whether those relationships can truly be handed over.
Buying a dog grooming business brings a salon, equipment and stylists. A dog walking business brings very little of that. You may be paying for a client list, a booking system, a brand and a team of walkers. Whether any of that is worth acquiring depends on one question: will people who trusted the old owner give the same trust to you?
What buying can give you
A purchase can give you existing weekly routes, a walker roster, a booking process that works and a name people recognize. You begin with income and reviews rather than an empty calendar. That can save slow marketing work. It also saves you from having to find your first clients one by one.
What starting gives you
Starting costs little in equipment and lets you build routes where you choose, hire walkers you picked and set your own standards. You carry no one else’s habits. The cost is time, because owners hand a house key only to someone they trust, and trust arrives slowly.
Questions that decide it
- Will clients be introduced to you by the seller, and will the seller stay for a handover period?
- Will the walkers stay, and are they free to work for you?
- How are house keys and access codes held, and who has copies?
- Does the seller agree not to start a competing walking business nearby?
Weighing it
If the clients followed the seller’s personality, the list may be worth less to you than it appears. What if the owner is the business looks at this directly. A lawyer can put a handover period and a non-competition promise into the agreement. Can I ask for more if I offer to train the new owner shows the seller’s side.
