Should I buy an existing feed store or start one?
Buying an existing feed store gives you supplier relationships, farm customer accounts and local trust that a new store has to build over time, but you also take on its stock and habits. Starting fresh gives control and a clean slate. Weigh each path against the questions below.
This question is about a retail feed store, the kind that sells bagged feed, fencing and animal health products across a counter. It is not about building a mill. The two paths differ most in what you can get quickly and what only time provides. Think through both in terms of suppliers, customers and stock, and compare them honestly with your own experience.
Supplier lines and dealer agreements
A store’s feed brands and product lines are often the reason farmers shop there. A newcomer may not be offered the same lines, or may be offered them on different terms. If you buy, ask whether the supplier will keep supplying you and approve you as the new owner. If you start, ask suppliers early what they require before they will sell to you.
Farm accounts and local trust
Farm customers often buy on account and stay loyal to people they know. An existing store brings that history, along with receivables you will need to understand. A new store has to earn each customer, which takes patience. Ask how much of the business is repeat trade, and whether those customers will stay once the owner they trust has left.
Seasons, stock and capital
Feed stores build stock ahead of busy seasons, and some products age on the shelf. Buying means inheriting stock you must inspect carefully. Starting means buying your own, with no sales history to guide how much. Compare the cash each path ties up, and ask a lender what it would want to see for either one. The supplier rebate page explains one detail worth raising.
