Should I buy a weight loss franchise or an independent clinic?
Neither route is better for everyone. A franchise gives you a branded program, product supply and training, but you follow its rules and need approval to buy. An independent clinic gives you freedom over methods, with more to build yourself. Weigh the control, the support and who holds the client relationship.
Buyers entering weight management often face this choice early. The answer depends on how much structure you want, how much you want to shape the program, and how comfortable you are working inside another company’s rules. This page sets out the questions to ask on each side.
The branded program and supply
A franchise comes with a method, materials, training and often a required product supplier. That shortens the learning curve. The trade-off is that you may have to buy products from the franchisor and cannot change the program. Ask what happens when the brand updates its approach or discontinues a product.
Franchisor approval of a resale
If you buy an existing franchised clinic, the franchisor usually has a say. Ask what approval involves, what training you must complete and whether the brand has a right to step in. Read the franchise agreement and any disclosure document with a lawyer who handles franchises. Landlord consent can also be needed.
Territory and marketing fund
Ask what area the clinic has and whether the brand can place another location or an online channel nearby. Find out what you pay into a shared marketing fund and what you receive back in leads. Compare those leads with what the clinic would generate on its own.
Who owns the client relationship
In a franchise, clients often come because of the brand, and the brand may hold their data. In an independent clinic, clients follow the people and the reputation of the clinic itself. Ask who holds the client list and what happens to it if the agreement ends.
