Should I open a vape shop or buy an existing one?
Buying gets you a shop that already trades: a location, supplier accounts, customers, staff and stock, along with its history. Starting lets you choose the site, layout and product mix with no inherited record, but you build everything and wait for sales. Weigh the lease, fit-out, stock, ramp-up time and compliance record on each side, and ask your lawyer about permits.
Both routes can work, and the right one depends on what you are good at and how much uncertainty you can carry. A start-up gives you control and a clean slate. An acquisition gives you something that already runs and a past you must understand. This page lays out the trade-offs. It does not tell you which to choose.
What an existing shop already has
A shop that trades today comes with a site (confirm the permitted use with the municipality), supplier accounts, regular customers, trained staff, fixtures and stock. You can see sales before you commit. The cost of that is paying for what is there and taking on its habits. Ask which of these assets actually transfer to a buyer, since a lease or an account may need the other side’s consent.
What a start-up lets you choose
Starting new lets you pick the site, design the layout, choose the product mix and set the tone with customers from the first day. You also begin with no inherited complaints or records. The trade is time and effort: negotiating a lease, fitting out the space, building stock and winning customers one at a time, with little income until the shop finds its footing.
Questions for each route
Whichever you lean toward, ask your lawyer what permits and approvals the shop needs, who issues them, and whether a new site or a new owner changes the answer. Ask the municipality what it allows at an address before you sign a lease. If you buy, the due diligence checklist shows what to ask about the shop’s record.
