Should I buy an existing record store or open one?
Buying brings a used-stock pipeline, distributor and label accounts, a known location and an online seller history. Starting means building stock and accounts from nothing, but you choose the location and lease. Price out each path with your own quotes and advisers before deciding.
Buying a record store and opening one are really two different projects. One gives you a business that already trades, with its habits and its faults. The other gives you a blank room and the freedom to fill it your way. Neither choice is right for everyone, so the useful thing is to see what each path hands you and what each asks you to build.
What an existing shop can bring
A running shop may come with a flow of used collections from the public, accounts with distributors and labels, a known location, regular customers and an online seller history with reviews. Those take years to build. Ask which of them are in the business’s name and which belong to the owner personally, since what moves depends on how the deal is structured and on the contracts. Your lawyer can confirm.
What starting from nothing means
A new shop begins with no stock, no accounts and no reputation. You build the inventory record by record, earn the trust of sellers and persuade distributors to open accounts. In return you choose the neighbourhood, negotiate your own lease, and design the shop and its systems without inheriting someone else’s habits or problems.
What to price out on each side
For a purchase, list the price asked, the stock count, any closing adjustments, legal and accounting fees, and money for the first months. For a start-up, list fit-out, a first round of stock, deposits, equipment, a point-of-sale system and the months before sales settle. Get real quotes, and do not rely on rules of thumb.
- Which accounts and logins would move to you, and which would not.
- How long the lease runs and whether the landlord will agree to an assignment.
- How much of the shop’s following depends on the current owner.
- How much time you can spend sourcing stock yourself.
Other trades face the same choice, as in buying an existing print shop or starting one and buying an existing embroidery business or starting one.
