Should I sell my restaurant or keep running it?
Choosing between selling, keeping and hiring a manager, or closing and selling the equipment starts with your own energy, health and plans, then the time left on your lease, the state of your staff and records, and what each route would leave you with. An accountant, a lawyer and a broker can each test one part of the decision.
Owners rarely decide to sell on a single day. A tired season, a health scare or a change at home makes the question louder. This page is not about what the restaurant would fetch. It is about the choice itself, and how to make it with a clear head before you tell staff, suppliers or guests anything.
Start with your own energy and plans
Ask what you want the next few years to look like. Do you still enjoy the work? Could your health or family carry the hours? Some owners find that a break, a partner or a different schedule answers the question. Others know they are finished. Write your reasons down, because a buyer will ask for them.
Keep it, but not the way you run it now
Hiring a general manager or a head cook can let you step back and keep the business. It only works if the restaurant can run without you in the room. Test that by taking a few weeks away and seeing what slips. If it falls apart, that also tells you how a buyer would see it.
Sell the business, or close and sell the equipment
A sale of the running business keeps staff, name and guests together. Closing and selling the equipment is simpler but ends all of that. Going concern or equipment compares the two routes, and preparing for handover shows what a buyer will want to see.
Who can help you decide
- Your accountant can explain how each route affects your own finances.
- Your lawyer can read your lease and any franchise agreement.
- A broker can tell you how buyers are responding to similar restaurants.
