What costs come on top of the price when you buy a pet store?

Beyond the agreed price, a pet store buyer needs cash for the stock count at closing, live-animal supplies and care, a lease deposit, working capital for food reorders, equipment repairs and professional fees. Build the list from the seller’s records, then add a cushion for what you only learn after you take over.

The price in the agreement is rarely the whole cash need. A pet store carries stock that has to be paid for, animals that have to be fed, and a lease that may ask for money up front. Make a list early so your lender and you see the same total. The buying guide covers the process; this page covers the cash around the price.

Stock at closing

Inventory is often counted on the closing date and added to the amount you pay, so the final figure can differ from the one you expected. Ask how the count is done, who does it and how damaged or expired items are handled. See how stock is counted when a store sells.

Live animals and care supplies

If the store keeps fish, birds or small animals, you take on their feed, tanks, heating, medication and the time to look after them. Ask what is included in the sale and who will tend the animals on the first day. A related look at buying an aquarium or fish store shows what such stock involves.

Lease, working capital and repairs

A landlord may want a deposit or a new guarantee from you. Food suppliers will want to be paid on schedule even in a slow week, so keep working capital for reorders. Ask when the shelving, freezers, tank systems and till were last serviced, and budget for repairs.

Professional fees

Expect fees for your lawyer and accountant, and possibly for a lender’s review. Ask each for an estimate before you commit.
