What should I check before buying a workwear store?

Before buying a workwear store, check who the trade and corporate accounts are, what the brand and supplier agreements allow, how much stock is in full size runs and how much is aged, and whether embroidery or printing is done in-house. Those four show whether the store runs on repeat orders or on walk-in sales.

A workwear store sells boots, coveralls, high-visibility clothing and safety gear to tradespeople and employers. It looks like a clothing shop, but ask whether buyers return on a schedule and whether a few companies order for whole crews. Start with the accounts and the suppliers behind them, and ask the seller to walk you through how a typical order moves from request to delivery.

Trade and corporate accounts

Ask which employers buy regularly, how they place orders and whether any account is held by the owner personally. Look for a pattern of repeat purchases instead of a few large one-off orders. Ask how many accounts the store serves and what would happen if the biggest left.

Supplier and brand agreements

Ask whether a brand’s dealer status transfers to a new owner automatically. Ask to see each dealer agreement, any territory limits, minimum purchase terms and return policies. Speak to the main suppliers, with the seller’s permission, about whether they would continue. The steps in how to check supplier relationships apply directly.

Inventory and the embroidery add-on

Safety apparel is bought by size, so a shelf can look full while key sizes are missing. Do a physical count, sort stock by age and season, and set aside discontinued lines and items that no longer meet a customer’s requirements. If the store embroiders logos, review the machines and the customer artwork; see what to check before buying an embroidery business.
