Will a travel agency’s agents stay with me after I buy it?

Nobody can promise it, so find out early. Talk to each agent before closing if the seller allows it. Ask about pay, their own client base and what they fear from a sale. Agents with loyal clients have options, so give them reasons to stay beyond a handshake.

Learn the arrangement for each agent. Some are employees, some are independent contractors and some earn only commission. Pay structures, split rules and benefits affect how easily someone walks away. Ask your lawyer what each person’s agreement says and what a new owner inherits.

Look at who holds the clients. Agents who built their own following can take it elsewhere, with or without paperwork. That does not make them bad hires, but it means you must offer them something concrete: fair commission, good tools, supplier access and respect for how they work.

Plan the conversation. Ask the seller how and when agents will be told. Surprise breeds worry, and worry sends people looking at other firms. Meet each one privately, listen to concerns and be honest about your plans. Do not promise changes you may not keep. After closing, keep disruption low. Leave pay and systems alone at first, then adjust gradually with notice. Ask the seller to stay for a transition period and introduce you. A stay bonus or a retention arrangement could be part of the purchase, which your lawyer and accountant can structure.

Key takeaways

  • Learn each agent’s status, pay structure and who owns their client relationships.
  • Meet agents privately before closing, if permitted, and listen first.
  • Change little at first, and consider a retention arrangement with advice.
  • Ask the seller to stay through a transition period and introduce you to each agent.
