How Shell describes the arrangement

Shell’s “Partnering with Shell” page invites people to “join the network of independent business owners running 85% of Shell service stations”, and its “Why choose Shell?” page says the 85% figure is for Shell service stations globally. For Canada the page says there are “1,400+ Locations in Canada” and “Over 60% of locations in Canada with dealers, wholesalers, and joint venture partners” (all as published, read Oct 22, 2026; the page footnote says its figures are accurate as of 2025). Its “Why choose Shell?” page says you benefit from Shell’s know-how “all while staying in control of your own service station”. Shell calls the arrangement “A team, not a franchise”. That is a description from the brand owner, not a legal conclusion, and the agreement you are actually offered is what governs.

What a Shell listing on Deavo is

The cards below are service stations whose listing names Shell. Deavo counted 19 on Oct 20, 2026, all in Ontario (19). A listing that names the brand does not tell you what the seller owns: it might include the land and building, the business only, or a supply arrangement. Ask each seller which of these are being sold and whether Shell’s agreement transfers to you. Asking prices are what the advertiser wrote, not a valuation.

Who may become a Shell dealer

The questions section of Shell’s “Partnering with Shell” page asks, “Do I need to own a service station already?” and answers: “Not necessarily, we welcome Dealers with and without existing service stations. We’ll help assess what’s possible for your situation.” On term, it says only that its partnerships “are designed for growth and longevity, but we’ll go through terms clearly before anything is signed.” No length of term, renewal right or fee is on the pages read.

Training and support

Shell lists “Support from day one” — a “dedicated Shell team, onboarding and tools” — and its FAQ includes a question on where to get training to operate a Shell gas station. The pages read give no duration for any training, so none is stated here.

How branded stations are owned

Shell does not describe a Shell station as a franchise, so the franchise-disclosure block used for franchise brands does not appear on this page. Whether a particular supply or dealer agreement is a franchise in law depends on its terms. Ontario’s Arthur Wishart Act (Franchise Disclosure), 2000 defines a franchise as a right to engage in a business where the franchisee is required by contract or otherwise to make a payment or continuing payments to the franchisor or the franchisor’s associate, and further conditions are met — for example, goods or services substantially associated with a trade-mark owned by or licensed to the franchisor or its associate, together with the franchisor’s right to exercise significant control over, or provide significant assistance in, the franchisee’s method of operation. Section 2(3) lists relationships the Act does not apply to. A lawyer should read the actual agreement before you decide which rules apply to your purchase. Supply agreement, not franchise agreement

A Shell-branded station is usually owned and operated by an independent business that buys its fuel under a supply or retailer-licence agreement with the brand owner. That is not a franchise agreement, so the provincial franchise disclosure statutes generally do not apply to it — there is no statutory disclosure document and no statutory rescission right to rely on. A lawyer should confirm how the specific agreement for the station you are buying is characterised before you sign.
