Buying a Shell station
Shell says it welcomes “Dealers with and without existing service stations” (as published by Shell, read Oct 22, 2026). It publishes no price, fee or capital requirement, and says terms are explained “before anything is signed”. Buying a Shell-branded station means asking what is being sold and what Shell’s agreement requires of you.

What Shell says
Shell’s “Partnering with Shell” page asks, “What investments do I need to team up with Shell?” and answers, “Investment levels vary depending on your service station and goals. We can talk this through on an introduction call.” It asks, “Is there a long-term contract?” and answers that partnerships “are designed for growth and longevity, but we’ll go through terms clearly before anything is signed” (as published, read Oct 22, 2026). Nothing on the pages read states a fee, a minimum capital figure, a term length or a transfer rule, so none is given here.
Dealers with and without a station
Shell’s answer to whether you must already own a station is “Not necessarily”. That matters to a buyer in two ways. If you buy a station that already carries the Shell brand, its agreement with Shell was negotiated by someone else, and whether it passes to you is a question for the seller and Shell. If you buy an unbranded station, or one with another brand, the question is whether Shell will supply it; Shell says, of dealers with and without existing stations, that it will “help assess what’s possible for your situation”. A Shell listing on Deavo does not tell you which case applies, so ask the seller directly.
What the price might cover
Check what each service-station listing includes. Ask whether the asking price covers the land and building or only the business, and whether it includes the fuel equipment, the convenience store inventory and any car wash. Ask whether any underground tanks have been tested, and what environmental records exist. The asking price is the seller’s number, and nothing on this page is a valuation or a recommendation to buy.
Whether Shell has to approve you
Shell’s pages do not say whether it approves a buyer of an existing Shell-branded station, or whether its agreement can be assigned. Ask the seller for the current agreement and ask Shell, in writing, what it requires before it will deal with you. The same question arises on a franchise resale, which who has to approve a franchise resale explains for franchise brands.
Is it a franchise in law?
Shell calls its offer “A team, not a franchise”. Deavo’s Shell listings on Oct 20, 2026 were in Ontario (19). Ontario has a statute that defines “franchise” by its terms rather than by what a brand calls itself. Under the Arthur Wishart Act (Franchise Disclosure), 2000 a franchise is a right to engage in a business where the franchisee is required by contract or otherwise to make a payment or continuing payments to the franchisor or the franchisor’s associate, and either (a) the franchisee may sell goods or services substantially associated with a trade-mark owned by or licensed to the franchisor or its associate, and the franchisor or its associate has the right to exercise or exercises significant control over, or has the right to provide or provides significant assistance in, the franchisee’s method of operation; or (b) the franchisor grants representational or distribution rights to sell goods or services supplied by the franchisor or a supplier it designates, and location assistance is provided. Section 2(3) lists relationships the Act does not apply to, such as an employer-employee relationship or a partnership. Whether a Shell dealer agreement meets that definition is a question for a lawyer reading the agreement, not something this page can decide.
