Can I buy a heavy truck repair shop if I’m not a diesel mechanic?
Many people own heavy truck repair shops without turning a wrench, but the shop only works if a trusted senior technician runs the floor and the fleet customers believe in them. Plan who holds that role, what the seller will do during the handover, and how you will earn the fleet managers’ confidence.
Owning a heavy-duty shop and repairing trucks are different jobs, and plenty of owners do only the first. What matters is whether the shop can keep diagnosing and fixing tractors and trailers properly after you arrive. Before you commit, decide who will do the technical judging, because you will be relying on them every day. The page on buying an auto repair shop covers the light-duty side.
Who becomes the lead hand
Every shop of this kind leans on one person who knows the work: a lead hand or shop foreman who assigns jobs, checks the repairs and talks to the customer about what a truck needs. Find out who that person is now, how long they have been there and whether they plan to stay. If the shop has no such person, you will need to hire one before you close, not after.
How fleet managers see a new owner
A fleet manager sends trucks to a shop because they trust its diagnosis and its turnaround. They will watch whether a new owner who cannot diagnose a truck still keeps the same people and standards. Meet the main accounts with the seller present if the seller agrees. Be honest about your background and show them how the work will keep being checked.
Trade tickets and the seller’s help
Ask who on the team holds the trade tickets and confirm any certification requirements with the relevant trade body or regulator. Then agree on a handover with the seller: how long they will stay, what they will do, and how they will introduce you to customers and suppliers.
