How do I compare cell phone store franchise opportunities?

Compare them by who controls the things that earn money: plans and pricing, the customer relationship, territory and the commission schedule. A carrier-branded dealer, a franchisor and an independent multi-brand store each hand those controls to different parties, so ask who can change them and how much notice you get.

The phrase cell phone store covers several different arrangements, and they do not behave alike. Before comparing fees or locations, work out which kind of arrangement you are looking at. Then ask the same set of questions of each, so differences show up in what you control rather than in how each brochure describes itself.

Three common models

A carrier-branded dealer sells one carrier’s plans under that carrier’s name. A franchisor model gives you a brand, a system and support, with the franchisor’s own rules on top. An independent multi-brand store chooses its own suppliers and carriers but negotiates terms on its own. Each trades control for support differently, so decide which trade suits your experience.

Who sets plans and owns the customer

Ask who sets plan pricing and promotions, and whether the store can change them. Ask who holds the customer account, and what happens to those customers if the agreement ends or the store closes. Where the customer belongs to the carrier or franchisor, a later buyer will check whether the agreement can be assigned to them.

Territory and commissions

Ask how territory is defined, whether it is exclusive and whether the other party can place another location nearby. Ask how commissions are calculated, how they can change and how much notice is given. Current owners can tell you how this has worked in practice, so speak with several.
