How do I find a cabinet shop for sale?

Look beyond listing sites. Cabinet shops often change hands through builders, designers, hardware and sheet-goods suppliers who know an owner is thinking of retiring. When a shop does appear, sort it first as custom or production work, then ask how much of its work comes from a few builders.

A cabinet shop can be a one-person custom studio, a mid-sized kitchen builder or a production plant that supplies home builders. Searches for “cabinet business for sale” mix all of them. Decide which kind of shop suits your skills and your lender before you start, because that choice changes where you look and what you ask once you find a listing.

Ask the people who supply the trade

Hardware distributors, sheet-goods suppliers and edge-banding or finishing suppliers visit many shops and hear who is tired, who is expanding and who wants out. Tell their sales representatives what you are looking for. Kitchen designers, home builders and renovators also know which shops are reliable, and an owner who is ready to retire will often talk to a trusted supplier before anyone else.

Use listing sites and brokers, with the right words

Search under cabinetry, millwork, kitchen manufacturing and woodworking, and save the searches. Business brokers who work in manufacturing may know of shops that are not advertised. Give them a short profile of the shop you want and proof that you can finance it. For a wider look at plants and workshops, see how to find a manufacturing business for sale.

Screen the listing before you call

  • Is the work custom, production or a mix, and who designs it?
  • Does the shop depend on one or two builders for most of its jobs?
  • Does the owner do the estimating, the drawings and the sales alone?
  • Is the building included, or is it leased from the owner or another company?

If you are still deciding whether to buy or build from nothing, read whether to buy a cabinet-making business or start one.
