How do I find out if a recording studio’s regulars are loyal to the room or the engineer?

Look at what happened to regulars when an engineer was away or left, and who they asked for when they booked. If clients followed one person, the loyalty is to that engineer. If they stayed through a change, they value the room, the price or the location.

Look first at the booking records. For the top regular clients, note who engineered their sessions and whether anyone else ever did. If every session has the same name attached, you may be buying an engineer’s following more than a studio’s.

Then find the natural experiments. Has an engineer taken leave or left? What happened to their clients in the following months? Did bookings continue, shift to another engineer or stop? That history is stronger evidence than any assurance.

Ask clients directly where the seller allows it. A short conversation can reveal what they value: the sound of the room, the gear, the location, the price, the atmosphere or a particular person. Ask what they would do if the engineer moved. Check how clients book. If they message the engineer on their phone rather than use the studio’s calendar, the relationship is personal. Ask the seller how engineers are encouraged to keep clients booking through the studio. Your lawyer can advise on agreements that bear on this. Compare it with how the newer clients arrived, which can show whether the room attracts people by itself.

Key takeaways

  • Match top regulars to the engineers who recorded them.
  • Study what happened to clients when an engineer was away or left.
  • Ask regulars what they value about the room versus the person.
  • Notice whether clients book through the studio or directly with the engineer.
