How do I sell a kayak or paddleboard rental business?

Prepare a paddle-sport rental for sale by timing the listing around the season, documenting the age and condition of each boat and board, showing how the launch or dock access passes to a buyer, listing advance bookings and partners, and keeping the sale quiet from seasonal staff until you are ready.

Buyers of a paddle rental are buying a summer. They want to see boats in good shape, a place to put them in the water, and customers who will come back. If you can show those three things clearly, the conversation gets easier. Start preparing well before you tell anyone you plan to sell.

Choose your moment

Many owners start serious conversations late in the season or just after it, when the year’s results are fresh and the buyer has time to plan for the next one. Listing in the middle of a busy summer is hard, because you are working the dock. Whatever you pick, give a buyer a full season of records to read.

Show the fleet and the access

Make a simple fleet list: each boat or board, its age, its condition, repairs and what is stored where. Then explain how customers reach the water. If you use a dock, a beach, a marina or a neighbour’s land, say whether it is owned, leased or by agreement. Your lawyer can confirm whether any agreement or permit can pass to a buyer.

Hand over bookings and partners

List advance bookings, deposits you are holding, and arrangements with hotels, camps and tour companies. A buyer will ask which of these continue after the sale. Tell your partners at the right time, with the buyer’s agreement. If you work with a broker, ask whom the broker acts for and how confidentiality is handled with seasonal staff.
