How do I sell my trucking company when I’m one of the drivers?

Prepare by making yourself replaceable. Hire or train someone for your seat and the dispatch work, write down the customers and lanes you hold personally, show your unpaid driving honestly in the numbers, separate personal trucks from company ones, and offer a defined handover period.

When the owner drives, a small fleet is partly a business and partly a job. A buyer will ask which one they are getting. The more the company depends on you personally, the harder it is to hand over. Preparing early gives a buyer something they can actually take on, and gives you more choice about timing and terms.

Replace your own seat

Begin by finding out what happens when you are off the road. If a hired driver can run your truck and the customers stay, that is evidence the business works without you. Consider moving your dispatch, invoicing and customer calls to someone else well before listing, so a buyer can see the company run on its own.

Write down what only you know

List the customers, contacts, lanes and special requirements that exist only in your head or your phone. Which loads come from whom, and why they come to you. Introduce a successor to key customers while you still can. Buyers value work that is documented, and customers feel safer when they have already met the next person.

Show the numbers honestly, and plan the handover

If you take less than a full wage for driving, tell your accountant so the statements can show it. Keep personal vehicles and costs separate from the company’s. Then offer a handover period you can stick to, with defined duties, so a buyer knows what support to expect after closing and for how long.

  • Who covers your truck and your dispatch work.
  • Customer and lane notes, in writing.
  • Clean separation of personal and company vehicles.
  • A handover plan with dates and duties.
