Expert answer

How many buyers will actually look at my business?

Far more people click, browse or send an initial inquiry than ever become qualified buyers, and the number who put forward a serious, financed offer is smaller again, so raw inquiry counts are a poor way to judge how a listing is performing compared with how many of those inquiries turn into real conversations.

Reviewed

Owners often watch the number of inquiries on a listing closely, and then feel discouraged or reassured based on a figure that does not actually predict how the sale will go. The funnel narrows sharply at every stage, and that is normal, not a sign something is wrong.

Most inquiries are lookers, not buyers

A meaningful share of anyone who contacts a listing is curious rather than committed: competitors scouting the market, people early in exploring whether they even want to buy a business, or browsers comparing listings with no near-term plan to act. This is normal, and it is not a reflection of how good the listing or the business is.

Confidentiality narrows the pool on purpose

A blind listing that withholds the business’s identity, combined with a requirement to sign a non-disclosure agreement before real detail is shared, deliberately filters out anyone not willing to take a real step. That drop-off between an initial click and a signed NDA is doing useful work, not losing you buyers.

Qualification cuts it down further

Of the people who do sign an NDA, only some can show financial capacity or a credible financing plan, and only some have the experience, motivation and timeline to actually get a deal done. This stage is where a broker, or a seller running their own process, spends most of their screening effort.

What actually widens the pool

A realistic asking price, a well-organized information package, and a broker or listing with genuine reach into your industry all bring in more of the right kind of interest, rather than simply more interest. A business priced well above what similar listings are getting tends to attract fewer serious conversations, not more.

Judge quality over count

One financially qualified buyer who understands the industry and moves at a steady pace is worth more than a dozen inquiries that never go anywhere. Track how many people move from inquiry to signed NDA to a real conversation, not the raw number of clicks a listing receives.
