Should I buy a dog daycare or start one?
Weigh what you would rather build or inherit. Buying gives you a fitted space, clients and staff but also the owner’s habits and commitments. Starting gives you a free hand but means finding a suitable site, earning owners’ trust and building routines. Decide which risks you can manage better.
A dog daycare asks a lot of its owner: a suitable space, trained people, calm routines and clients who trust you with their pets. You can take that on ready-made or build it yourself. Neither path is easier. They give you different problems, and the right choice depends on which ones you are better placed to solve. If you lean towards buying, can I buy a business with no experience covers a common worry.
The space
A buyer takes over a space that is already fitted for dogs, and has already been accepted by the landlord and neighbours. A new operator must find a unit that suits noise, flooring, drainage and outdoor access, and then wait for fit-out. Ask a buyer’s question about any existing space: how long does the lease run, and may it pass to you?
Clients and reputation
An existing daycare comes with regular clients and a name local owners know. That can save months. It can also carry the old owner’s mistakes. Read reviews, and ask for a sense of why clients left. A new daycare earns trust slowly, but its reputation will be yours alone.
Staff and routines
Handlers who know the dogs are hard to replace. Ask which staff plan to stay and who runs the temperament assessment for new dogs. When you start fresh, you hire and train the team yourself and set the rules for play groups, incidents and pick-up. Some owners find that easier than inheriting habits they would not choose.
Questions to settle first
- Do you have experience handling groups of dogs, or will you hire it?
- Can you cover the early months while a new site fills up?
- Would you rather improve a running place or design your own?
