Should I buy an existing vehicle wrap shop or start one?

Neither route is better for everyone. An existing wrap shop hands you trained installers, a working install bay, fleet and dealer accounts, a design-file library and film-supplier relationships on day one. Starting gives you a clean slate and your own pace. Weigh how soon you need income and how much you can learn on the job.

Vehicle wrapping looks like a small trade with a low barrier to entry, and in some ways it is. The harder part is the skill and the customer base. A good wrap depends on careful installation, and a steady flow of jobs depends on people who already trust the shop. Before you decide, list what you would have to build from nothing and what you would be paying a seller to have already built.

What an existing shop gives you

The biggest item is usually people. Installers who can handle curved panels and large fleet vehicles take a long time to train, and they are hard to hire. An existing shop may also come with a heated, clean install bay, printers and cutters already set up, a library of design files, and accounts with film suppliers. Fleet and dealer customers who already call the shop are the other advantage, because they save you the slow work of winning that first round of trust.

What starting gives you

Starting lets you choose the location, the equipment and the kind of work you want, with no inherited habits or old customer promises. Ask what goodwill you would be paying for and whether it would stay if the owner left. The cost is time: you build a portfolio, find installers or learn the trade yourself, and wait for referrals to arrive. Many people who start do so because they already have installation experience.

Questions that tip the decision

  • Can you install well enough yourself, or would you depend on hired installers from the start?
  • Will the shop’s best customers stay with a new owner?
  • How long can you carry costs before work comes in?
  • Does the shop’s equipment and space suit the work you want to do?

If you lean toward buying, read the buyer’s checklist for a sign and graphics shop and ask the seller how work is won and who does it. Your accountant can help you compare the two paths using your own numbers.
