What should I do in the first month after buying a gas station?

In the first month, keep the forecourt running exactly as the seller ran it while you learn it. Shadow the fuel ordering and delivery rhythm, set up the daily pump and tank-reading routine, meet every employee, move vendor accounts into your name, and hold off on changes until you have seen a full cycle.

A gas station is two businesses on one lot: a forecourt that sells fuel and a store that sells everything else. After closing, both keep running whether or not you feel ready. The first month is for learning how the place actually works, protecting the routines that already earn money, and getting every account and record into your name before you start changing anything.

Learn the fuel rhythm first

Sit down with the fuel supplier and ask how orders are placed, how often trucks usually arrive and who receives them. Walk through a delivery with the seller if you can. Ask how the daily tank readings are taken and recorded, and who is responsible when a number looks wrong. Keep that routine unchanged until you have watched it work through a full ordering cycle.

Meet the people who keep it open

Cashiers and attendants know the regulars, the quirks of the till and which pump misbehaves. Meet each person early, confirm their shifts and ask what they would fix. If you plan to adjust schedules, wait until you understand why the current ones exist. Keep the seller’s contact details close, since many questions only come up on a real Tuesday night.

Move the accounts into your name

List every vendor and service account tied to the station: lottery, tobacco and snack distributors, the point-of-sale provider, the card processor, the price-sign contractor and any equipment service. Confirm each is in your name or the buyer’s company name. Check who holds the passwords for the POS and the fuel price sign, and change them once the handover is done. The guide to buying a gas station covers pre-closing checks.

Leave the big changes for later

Rebranding, rearranging the store, changing suppliers and rewriting the schedule can all wait. Make a short list of ideas as you notice them, then review it after you have seen a full month of sales and deliveries. Regulars notice sudden change, and you will make better choices once the numbers are in front of you.
