Pet Valu franchise training and support

Pet Valu’s franchise process page says franchisees receive “three weeks of formal training: one week virtual, and two weeks at a local store”. The same page and Pet Valu’s “Our Winning Formula” page give different training figures, shown separately below. Its filing describes manuals, a franchise portal and a mandatory annual convention (figures as published, read Oct 23, 2026).

The training Pet Valu describes

Three of Pet Valu’s own documents describe training, and they do not use the same figure. The process page lists “18+ hours of rigorous training in nutrition care, wellness, customer service and selling skills” among the benefits, then adds “three weeks of formal training: one week virtual, and two weeks at a local store”. The “Our Winning Formula” page says staff and franchisees, whom it calls Animal Care Experts, “receive a minimum of 12 hours of comprehensive training in pet nutrition, care, wellness, customer service and selling skills, developed in partnership with external veterinarians and Pet Valu’s own nutritional experts”. The filing says that before a franchise opens, “we, or an existing franchisee, provide initial training to the franchisee’s operator”. The pages may describe different programmes; ask Pet Valu which the operator of your store would complete.

Support on the franchise site

The process page lists what a franchisee has access to, including “a turnkey store build-out with grand opening support”, advice from Animal Care Experts, proprietary brands beside national brands, and in-store services such as self-service wash dog bays and Groomingdale’s salons. It also lists a loyalty program and “fully integrated omni-channel capabilities”, with a Canada-wide ecommerce site and Buy Online, Pick Up In-Store. The Winning Formula page says over 7,000 products are available from its warehouses, including over 1,500 proprietary products. These are the franchisor’s descriptions of its own offer, and none is verified here.

Ongoing support in the filing

The filing says Pet Valu offers on-going training and support, including mandatory attendance at an annual franchisee convention and, outside Québec, an annual regional meeting hosted by its executive team. Product, services, basic safety, selling skills, and pet nutrition and wellness training is also available to franchisees and their employees through an online learning portal. Franchisees are given the franchise manuals and forms, which set the standards for store design, technology systems, product and inventory specifications, uniforms, hours of operation, trademark use and marketing. Franchise Business Consultants help franchisees use the manuals to fix deficiencies found in regular standards and operations reviews, which it calls “Safe & Ready Assessments”.

PetConnect and the franchise councils

The filing describes “PetConnect”, a franchise sales, communications and engagement portal powered by FranConnect, a third-party provider. It says franchisees outside Québec use it to receive communications on upcoming events and new products, analyze sales trends and review documentation. It also says the voice of franchisees is represented by two elected franchise councils, one for franchisees outside Québec and one for Chico franchisees in Québec, which meet regularly with Pet Valu’s leadership.

What a resale buyer should ask

The filing says a purchaser must complete any training the Company requires before a transfer completes, without saying what that training is or how long it takes. Ask Pet Valu in writing whether an existing operator or a new owner repeats the three weeks, who pays for it, and when it must be finished. See does buying a resale require retraining? and the existing-unit page.

Before you commit

Training and support are only part of what you are buying into. Compare them with the published fees on the costs and fees page, then read the franchise disclosure document where a statute requires one. In Ontario, the Arthur Wishart Act (Franchise Disclosure), 2000 requires it “not less than 14 days” before signing or paying (s.5(1)). Pet Valu’s application steps are on the brand page.
