Can I buy a watch repair shop if I’m not a watchmaker?
You can, but the question is who sits at the bench. A watch repair shop usually depends on one skilled person. If you are not a watchmaker, plan around a watchmaker who stays or can be hired, a handover period with the seller, and a clear way to send out complex work.
In many trades a new owner can manage a team of skilled people. A watch repair shop is often smaller than that: one bench, one watchmaker, and a reputation built on their hands. Buying without that training is not impossible, but it changes what you are really buying. Think first about who will do the work, then about everything else.
Does the bench watchmaker stay?
If the seller is the only watchmaker, the business may leave with them. Ask whether there is an employee at the bench, and whether that person would stay under new ownership. Talk to them yourself, with the seller’s consent, before you commit. If nobody stays, ask how realistic it is to hire one, and how long that search could take.
Seller training and handover
A seller who agrees to stay on for a period can introduce you to customers and suppliers and show you how jobs move through the shop. Ask what they would teach and what they would not, since skills like movement repair take years. Have your lawyer put the length and terms of any handover in writing.
Sending out complex work
Some shops already send certain jobs, such as complex movements or specific brands, to specialists. That can let a non-technical owner run the front of the shop and the customer relationship while others do the bench work. Ask how that sent-out work is priced, tracked and insured in transit, and how customers are told.
What a non-technical owner can run
- The counter, customer service and ticket tracking
- Supplier accounts and ordering
- Retail sales of straps, batteries and watches
- Hiring, scheduling and the books
