A row marked “Not published” means the figure was not on the page we read — not that there is no such fee.
What the figures include
Recipe publishes one table for all its brands, headed “Investment requirements by concept and format”, and says each brand has “a proven investment structure” with “multiple real estate formats”: a new build, a conversion of an existing restaurant, or a non-traditional site such as a hotel, gas station, airport or mall. The page does not say which format the Kelsey’s range assumes, or what it covers line by line, so treat the range as the franchisor’s own published figure across formats. The minimum cash contribution is the cash Recipe asks a franchise partner to bring; the page does not define it further. Neither figure is a price for a restaurant that is already trading.
Royalty and advertising
Recipe’s FAQ says franchisees pay an ongoing royalty on weekly sales and put a portion of weekly sales into an advertising fund, and that the rates “may vary depending on the specific concept”. It lists Kelsey’s among the brands, but the rates themselves were not in the page text we read. In Ontario, where franchise disclosure applies, the prospective franchisee must receive a disclosure document not less than 14 days before the earlier of signing the franchise agreement or any other agreement relating to the franchise and paying any consideration relating to the franchise (Ontario’s Arthur Wishart Act, s.5(1), which excludes certain refundable deposits and is subject to the exemptions in s.5(7)), and Recipe says exact fees and terms are in it. Ask for it before relying on any figure here. See what disclosure a resale buyer gets.
Other costs at opening
Recipe’s FAQ lists pre-opening costs a franchisee should plan for: initial inventory and smallwares, hiring and training staff, local marketing and grand-opening promotion, utility deposits and setup fees, and pre-opening rent. It says the full breakdown is in the franchise disclosure document and varies by brand, market and the size of the location. None is quantified on the page.
Financing a Kelsey’s purchase
No Kelsey’s or Recipe page read names a lender or financing programme. Routes to ask about include the Canada Small Business Financing Program, BDC, a conventional lender or a vendor take-back — can a franchise purchase be financed? Ask the franchisor what it requires of a buyer: what financial requirements do franchisors set?
